Woman’s horror after Essex manicurist ‘hacked’ her nails

A woman has shared eye-watering photos of her mangled nails after a manicurist allegedly ‘hacked’ at them after a row in the salon – before telling her to leave and threatening to call the police.

Customer service manager Katie Bennett visited the Cinderellas Cute-Icle and Beauty Room salon in Colchester, Essex, on October 22 to get acrylic nail extensions.

However, after the acrylic was applied, the 33-year-old raised complaints about the nails – claiming they were uneven, bumpy, and had gaps in them.

Katie, who is from Partick in Glasgow but has been living in Colchester for eight years, says she informed staff that the nails were so bad she would have to remove them at home and said she was not happy paying for them.

However, she alleges the nail technician then ‘ran to the door’ to stop her from leaving and insisted on removing the nails before she left, to which Katie claims she reluctantly obliged.

The salon has disputed Katie’s version of events and claimed there was nothing wrong with the original job, while also saying Katie’s nails look bad as they had not been finished.

Katie says she was left in agony as the technician ‘hacked’ at her nails with an electric filer – as the customer begged her to be careful because it was hurting.

After asking the manicurist to be careful, Katie claims she was booted out of the shop – and has shared images of her mangled nails to warn others about her ordeal.

Katie said: ‘It hit such a nerve with me. I’ve been doing customer service for the last ten years and that’s not how you do it. [The technician] was so rude and it was so embarrassing.

‘I was really surprised. I get that it can be stressful when customers aren’t satisfied but that is the worst way to treat not just a customer, but anyone.’

Katie says that she was the only customer in the salon and says the staff members were complaining about other customers and discussing how much they wanted to go on their lunch.

Following her ordeal, Katie said: 'I called my boyfriend and burst out crying. I don't like confrontation. He was raging. I was in bits. I was really angry and upset. He hugged me to calm me down'

Katie said: ‘I spotted a nail bar I hadn’t been in before. I went in and asked for acrylic extensions which I have had done hundreds of times before. I just wanted to treat myself.

Katie claims that after the acrylic was applied, the nail technician went for her lunch and asked somebody else to shape the nails.

Katie said: ‘A girl who I think must have been in college, came over and she asked if the shape was okay and I said that was fine but the acrylic isn’t fine.

‘The girl was trying to shape them and even them out. I said they aren’t even and there are loads of gaps, which if left can cause injuries to the natural nail.

‘I said I wasn’t happy to pay for them in the state they are in. The original manicurist said she would take them off and started hacking. Then I tried to leave saying she was hurting me.

Following her appointment, Katie said: 'It is a really odd salon. It was really quiet and they were moaning about other customers and saying how much they want their lunch. There didn't seem much focus on the customer'

‘I told her I would go home and soak them off properly. Then she got up and ran to the door saying she thought I’d go home and paint them. I said I wouldn’t.

‘So I tried to be reasonable and sat back down. I thought that once she took the tips off she would soak off the rest so I took a deep breath and just stayed sat down and asked her to be careful.

‘She got the electric file and she started hacking them off. I said, “please slow down, you are hurting me” and she wouldn’t. I said it again and said, “I don’t want you to damage my nails and hands.”

‘She then told me to get out of the shop and I said, “You can’t force me to leave,” she then threatened to phone the police. I think she thought I just wanted free nails.

‘I can assure you I make enough money to pay £35 for a set of nails. I believe she kicked me out because I challenged her work.

‘I think she was just getting frustrated with me and wanted me out. I paid to have them done properly.

Katie warned: 'I know that in the grand scheme of things it's not a massive deal but so many girls get their nails done and [many] businesses rip off girls and I don't want that to happen'

‘I think I was a difficult customer for her because I wasn’t going to let her get away with charging me for a terrible job.

‘At this point, I thought, ‘I’m not achieving anything’ so I just left. I told her that the quality of her work was awful and her service was worse.

‘She then shouted at me to get out again and to never come back. I said, “don’t worry, I will never set foot in this shop again”.’

Katie claims the appointment took two hours overall and says she has had acrylic extensions done ‘hundreds of times’ and it usually take an hour at most.

Katie said: ‘I only wish I had taken more photos or a video when she was hacking them off but it was so upsetting and it was happening so fast.

‘It is a really odd salon. It was really quiet and they were moaning about other customers and saying how much they want their lunch. There didn’t seem much focus on the customer.

‘I’ve had so many offers from lovely nail artists saying they will do the treatment for free which is so nice. It kind of restores your faith in the industry.’

Salon’s response in full

A manager at Cinderellas Cute-Icle & Beauty Room salon said: ‘There was a complaint like that but it is very exaggerated and very, very different to what happened on that day.

‘The lady, [who] is my mother actually, dealt with that and we were both here at the time.

‘There was absolutely nothing wrong with her nails. She didn’t want to pay the £35 that was due and basically she said she would go home and soak them off.

‘We said, no we would take them off and she said, well just cut them then or file them, and that is what we did. Now she’s gone and done this, this is crazy.

‘There are so many untruths. They were filed off, they were filed away and she got up and left and didn’t let us finish the work. They are acrylic nails that are half taken off.

‘She left our shop and didn’t let us finish our work with her, I have seen those pictures actually and of course they are going to look like that if she’s not letting us finish.

‘There is a lynch mob out there actually that are really damaging us. You could send someone in here for acrylic nails and they would be extremely happy, like a genuine customer.

‘We’ve got genuine customer surveys in our shop that are voted five stars and people are very very happy but people like this will put us out of business and we are already suffering a bit.’
